Scottish Green Party Call for Two Year Rent Freeze

The Scottish Green Party have called for a 2 year rent freeze as part of the amendments to the Coronavirus (Scotland) (No.2) Bill to help “ensure the most vulnerable know that the roof over their head is secure”. Andy Wightman, the Scottish Greens' housing spokesperson said “A rent freeze must last for two years, to protect those tenants that are already in financial crisis.” He added, “Greens will also bring forward amendments to ban rent arrears accrued during the crisis being grounds for eviction after it is over, and to introduce a tenant’s hardship fund to match what the SNP and the Tories have provided for landlords.”

Coronavirus SSP Rebate Scheme to Launch on 26th May

A new online service for small and medium sized employers to reclaim statutory sick pay payments they have made to employees will launch on 26th May. The scheme will allow companies with fewer than 250 employees to apply to HMRC to recover the costs of paying coronavirus related SSP. The repayment will cover up to two weeks of SSP and is payable if an employee is unable to work because they:

  • Have coronavirus; or
  • Are self-isolating and unable to work from home; or
  • Are shielding because they have been advised that they are at high risk of severe illness from coronavirus
